A game-changer for consultants — research consulting topics, market trends, regulations and technical questions in ten minutes flat.
Resources / Exercise 3
Before a client meeting, a consultant needs three things: facts, context, and the right questions to ask. Traditional research takes two days. AI compresses that to ten minutes — leaving you free to focus on judgement and relationships, the things only a 30-year career can teach you.
| Tool | Best For | Cost | Citations? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | Structured analysis, frameworks, drafting briefs | Free / Plus Rs 1999/mo | Only with web-search on |
| Google Gemini | Current news, Indian context, integration with Google Search | Free / Advanced Rs 1950/mo | Yes, with source links |
| Perplexity | Research with footnoted citations, academic-style answers | Free / Pro $20/mo | Always — every claim cited |
Rule of thumb: Start research with Perplexity (for citations). Use Gemini for India-specific or very recent news. Use ChatGPT to turn the findings into a structured brief or memo.
Paste this into any AI tool, replacing the bracket with your topic:
I am preparing for a consulting engagement on [TOPIC]. Give me a research brief covering the 5 W's:
1. WHAT it is — definition, scope, sub-categories
2. WHO are the key players — companies, regulators, associations in India
3. WHEN — recent developments in the last 24 months, upcoming changes
4. WHERE — Indian market size, leading states/cities, global benchmarks
5. WHY it matters — opportunity, risk, top three trends
Add a final section titled "Five smart questions I should ask the client". Keep the whole brief under 1,000 words. Cite sources where possible.
A retired chemical engineer wants to consult on EV battery recycling. Ten minutes with Perplexity using the prompt above produces: definition, the four leading recyclers (Attero, Tata Chemicals, Lohum, BatX), the 2022 Battery Waste Management Rules, projected 100 GWh recycling need by 2030, and five client-ready questions. Total cost: zero. Total time: under 10 minutes.
AI models occasionally fabricate sources that look real. They will give you "Indian Journal of XYZ, 2023, Vol 12" — and the journal may not exist. Before quoting any source to a client or in a written report:
The senior consultants who get the most from AI build a simple daily habit: ten minutes every morning researching one topic they expect a client to ask about. Over a month that's thirty topics — a serious knowledge edge. Save your best prompts in a Google Doc; over time you will build a personal prompt library worth more than any course.
Avoid AI research for: live stock prices, today's news (use Google News instead), legal advice without a lawyer's review, medical diagnoses, and any number that must be precisely correct (use audited reports). Use AI to orient yourself, then validate with authoritative sources before action.
